▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄ WAR FOR WEB INDEPENDENCE ▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄

It is August First, 11:00 PM EST. A few nights ago, I really got invested into neocities. A few months ago, I simply thought it was cool.

But now, I hold my website and neocities as a whole in a bit of a more extreme light. I'll try and put my thoughts into a basic summary.

For me, this site is my war, my battle in web independence. I fucking hate most social media. I do not abhor capitalism, but I abhor the exploitation of the human spirit.

It is the human mind that brings creation forth from the dark recesses of existance. And yet, it is the same minds that brought innovation into the world who seek to constrain the minds of others. What is becoming of society?

As of now, the Online Safety Act in the United Kingdom is censoring content in the name of "safety." Steam and Itch.io are essentially under siege, being forced to take down content.

Our social media algorithms seek to dominate our attention; enslave our minds and stop us from thinking for ourselves. It seems that we have no space for US to control. Nowhere to escape from the ads, the hidden motives of personalized recommendations, and the censorship which implies we are too feeble to protect ourselves and our children so we must give up freedom for safety.

My page. Your page. You and I, even now, are not free. I don't own Neocities; I don't know what will happen to my account. I don't know what will happen to the website. I don't know where I can go if all of this is merely destroyed by forces greater than myself.

And yet, here you are. Here I am. I made my website because I believe in this freedom. I believe in self-expression. I'd rather build this site for it to die than let social media rule my personal life, show me who I should associate with, who a machine thinks would fit best for me.

That is all. I hope you enjoyed this rambling.
